Types of digital currencies Virtual currency A virtual currency was defined in 2012 by the European Central Bank as “a type of unregulated digital money, issued and usually controlled by its developers, that is used and accepted among members of a virtual community.” The US Treasury Department defined it more succinctly in 2013 as “a medium of exchange that functions as a currency in some environments, but does not have all the characteristics of a real currency.” The main feature of no virtual currency according to these definitions is its status as legal tender. Cryptocurrency: A cryptocurrency is a type of digital token that relies on cryptography to chain together digital signatures for token transfers in peer-to-peer and decentralized networks. In some cases a proof-of-work scheme is used to create and manage the currency. Cryptocurrency information: Cryptocurrencies work by easily transferring balances between two parties in transactions. These transfers revolve around the use of public and private encryption keys for security purposes. The transfer of balances ends with minimal processing fees, allowing users to avoid the steep shipping fees from most banks and financial institutions for transferring funds. The main disadvantage of cryptocurrencies is that since they are virtual, they do not have a central store, as a user's cryptocurrency balance can be completely wiped out by a computer failure if there are no backup copies of the cryptocurrency holdings. Advantages of cryptocurrency Cryptocurrency has advantages: first, it does not have a central authority (i.e. a controlling intermediary, unlike an electronic currency system such as PayPal), and second, it has a public ledger where virtual transactions are fully recorded.
